Typical Flow of a Therapy Session

So, you're thinking about therapy?

Every therapist operates differently based on their preference and client’s needs. Personally, I have found the following to work for me and my clients:

A. I begin sessions by asking “How are you?” and “How are you feeling?”

B. Then we will move into the focus of session; including what has happened since our last conversation, and dive into your history and past

C. At some point in our conversation, we will collaboratively agree on a between session assignment -if applicable

D. Before we end, I will ask you to highlight your main takeaways from our conversation

E. The last thing we do is agree on a time and date for next session

That’s it! This works for most of my clients and in instances where it doesn’t, the client and I collaboratively create a “flow” that better suits their needs and comfort. Therapy is an investment in your mental health and wellbeing. As such, I encourage everyone to be transparent with their therapist about what is working and not working for them in sessions to ensure their needs are consistently being met.
